(Tom) Waits for Santa

Just before the holidays I sat and broke bread (and beers) with two of the best people on the planet, Melissa and Kyle. We chatted about our upcoming Christmas plans. So much is changing for the three of us. I mentioned to them a recent critique with one of my students. She was visibly disappointed that she wouldn't be going home for the holidays, for her, her entire world was changing. My retort "Embrace everything that is different." I continued "If it's someone else's tradition take it for your own this year. New food, gulp it down with relish. It's all new, uncharted territory and it's yours to conquer." I couldn't help but think as I was giving this advice to my student that I was really talking to myself. We ended with a "Happy Christmas", and so began my holiday. As we three friends continued our talk of travel, new opportunities and old friends, we toasted to change and all the possibilities that lie ahead. As I sit here writing this I'm in a hotel, more than 500 miles from my own art desk. On Christmas eve and day I drew some comics while eating fast food and watching/listening to bad reality shows. And frankly, I couldn't be happier. Your life is what you make it, embrace everything that is different. Drawing comics in hotels makes me think of the musical stylings on one Mr. Tom Waits, hence the title for this week's comic. Highlighted above are some future strips in the works. Lots of amazing things on the horizon so be sure to check back often. Salutations of the Season from one Monster to Another! P.S. Steak 'n Shake (featured in panel #3) and their double bacon cheeseburger "all the way" may have to become a new holiday tradition.
